The Peruvian Pelican is a large seabird native to the coasts of South America, particularly along the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current. Known for its dark plumage and striking white neck with a yellowish hue, this pelican is slightly smaller than its North American relative but equally impressive in its fishing prowess.

Peruvian Pelicans primarily feed on fish, diving from the air and scooping prey into their expandable throat pouch. They often hunt in groups, taking advantage of schooling fish such as anchovies. These birds play a vital role in their ecosystem, helping to maintain balanced fish populations.

During the breeding season, Peruvian Pelicans gather in large colonies on rocky shores or islands. Nests are constructed from twigs, grass, and feathers, with both parents sharing incubation duties. Chicks are fed regurgitated fish until they are strong enough to fledge.

While the species is not currently endangered, it faces threats from overfishing, habitat disturbance, and climate change, which affect fish stocks. Conservation measures, including marine protected areas and sustainable fishing practices, are essential to safeguard their future.
